Congregation Ahavath Sholom invites the community to participate in a series of programs and services during the first 10 days of August.

These open house events are taking place in conjunction with the synagogue’s new membership drive. CAS is located at 15 North St.

A Kabbalat Shabbat service will be conducted by spiritual leader Barbara Cohen at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1. Live music will accompany the one hour service and a wine and cheese Oneg Shabbat will follow.

A Reconstructionist Shabbat service will take place from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Aug. 2, followed by an open house with light refreshments at CAS from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

On Erev Tisha B’av, Cohen will lead a candlelit service in remembrance of some of the darkest moments in Jewish history at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4. Chanting from the Book of Lamentations, reading poetry and experiencing silence will create the opportunity to focus on personal and communal loss and memory.

Nosh and Drosh Torah study will meet from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6. Participants generally bring vegetarian bag lunches to nosh while droshing (discussing).

Cohen will lead Shabbat services at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, and 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9. Communal discussions are part of the usual mix of Torah, prayer and singing. Saturday’s service will be followed by an open house from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

The final program will be a session called Bagels & Brainstorms, an ongoing event, at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10.
