PITTSFIELD >> Steven M. Silverman and Shawndell P. Cummings, members of Boy Scout Troop 20, recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, Scouting's highest honor.

Their Court of Honor ceremony was held at Sacred Heart Church on Sept. 27. The invocation was given by the Rev. James Joyce of Sacred Heart Church and Mayor Daniel Bianchi was the guest speaker.

Silverman, son of Lee and Kristin Silverman of Pittsfield, is a senior at Taconic High School.

Silverman has been in the Academy of Information Technology Program for almost four years and wants to pursue a career in the computer field.

He is a member of the cross country and track and field teams and the National Honor Society.

Silverman joined Boy Scout Troop 20 in January 2009, crossing over from Cub Scout Pack 20 with the Arrow of Light Award. He is at the rank of Brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow and is assistant senior patrol leader in his troop. He is a recipient of a Troop 20 Honor Medal and has participated in numerous Eagle Scout projects and community service activities.

Silverman s Eagle Scout project consisted of renovating the Squad Room at the Lenox Sportsmen s Club. Pipes were moved, ceiling tiles were replaced, walls and floors were painted, new lighting and new shelving was installed. The firing line was painted and re-taped for added safety. A total of 126 hours of work was done by Troop 20 scouts, leaders and family members.


Cummings, son of the late Amy E. Cummings and grandson of Louis and Bonnie Cummings of Pittsfield, joined scouting in 2006 as a Cub Scout with Pack 20 at Sacred Heart Church, earning his Arrow of Light. He crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 20 where he held positions of den chief for Pack 20, patrol leader and senior patrol leader.

He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and is in the process of earning his second Eagle Palm. He also earned a Troop 20 Honor Medal.

Cummings' Eagle project involved clearing all overgrown grass and weeds around the memorial stones for over 400 veterans at the West Fountain Lawn and East Fountain Lawn sections at the Pittsfield Cemetery. He also placed the American flags in preparation for the Memorial Day holiday.

Cummings, a senior at Taconic High School, is an honor student in the Academy of Information Technology Program and a member of the track and field team. He is planning on attending college in fall 2016.

Besides the two Eagle Scouts earning Troop 20 Honor Medals, Troop Committee member and Secretary Kristin Silverman also earned an Honor Medal. The medals are awarded to scouts or adults in the troop who have done exceptional work for the troop over several years.
