The North Adams Public Library has acquired 15 file cabinets containing some important newspaper clippings from the North Adams Transcript dating back to the turn of the century.

The so-called "morgue" of Transcript articles is available in microfilm at the library but until this acquisition, researchers needed to know a date for their article or search through spools of microfilm hoping to find the information they seek.

Under the supervision of local historian Gene Carlson, volunteers will sort through the files and create a searchable, subject database so that people looking for specific news articles will have a date list and brief abstract to zero in on the right microfilm.

In addition to aiding patrons, reference librarians will now be able to answer many local history questions with a simpler search.

This acquisition adds to the collection of local history information already available in the Reference Department of the North Adams Public Library including the digital archives of the historic Hoosac Tunnel collection and the Drury High School yearbooks available anytime online.
