The Berkshire Athenaeum will offer extended hours on Mondays beginning Sept. 12. The library will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

"Libraries today are less about what we have for people and more about what we do for and with people. This extra evening allows us to better fit into our patrons' busy schedules," said Library Director Alex Reczkowski, who took the helm July 1.

With this increase, the city's library is open 63 hours a week; since 2010, the library has been open 59 hours per week.

With over a quarter of a million circulations last fiscal year, nearly 100 items were borrowed for each hour the library was open. Translated into dollars, that's close to $5 million in resources the community is borrowing instead of buying, Reczkowski noted.
