An free informational program about the Greening the Gateway Cities tree planting program in Pittsfield will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Berkshire Athenaeum, 1 Wendell Ave.

Pittsfield is one of eight Massachusetts cities chosen by the Mass. Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs to receive trees. Eight hundred trees, averaging 6 feet in height, will be planted between September and November 2016.

Mathew Sharron, a representative of GGCP, will explain why the state and municipalities have entered into this collaboration, where the trees will be planted, which trees are suitable for urban neighborhoods and how tree planting will benefit the local economy.
