The Grammy awards are primarily about glitz, glitter, controversy, wardrobes and odd musical pairings, but the sponsoring Recording Academy does a lot of understated work as well. An example is the establishment of a music educator award to be given for the first time in 2014.

The award is open to U.S. music teachers from kindergarten through college, and students are invited to nominate teachers online at www.grammymusicteacher.com. By honoring one teacher, the academy will be drawing attention to the importance of teachers of music and other arts forms. These teachers and their classes, regrettably, are usually first in line when school departments cut budgets.

"Teachers really are the unsung heroes of our creative community," said Justin Timberlake in trumpeting the award on Sunday night’s Grammy telecast. The contributions of teachers should be sung out loud, and the music educator award will help assure that they are.
