H THE SEAFARER. On Christmas Eve, a battered and bruised (physically as well as spiritually) working- class Irishman finds himself in the high-stakes poker game of his life — for his very soul — in this slyly written, darkly funny and, at the same time, deeply affecting play by Irish playwright Conor McPherson. Far removed from "It's-a-Wonderful-Life" sentimentality, this richly directed, insightfully acted production's assertion of the human spirit resonates long after the last card has been played (12/24). Through Dec. 28. (2:25)

TheaterWorks, City Arts on Pearl, 233 Pearl St., Hartford, Conn. Tickets: $37-$58. (860) 527-7838
