PITTSFIELD -- Williamstown lawyer-turned-actor James Briggs launches his new Starry Night Theater this weekend with "Vincent," a one-man play about artist Vincent van Gogh, written by Leonard Nimoy.
"Vincent" runs Fridaythrough Dec.30 at Barrington Stage Company's St. Germain Stage in the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center, 36 Linden St..
Performances are Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7; Friday and Saturday evenings at 8; Sunday afternoons at 4; and special matinees Dec. 22 and 29 at 4.
Brant Pope is directing Briggs in this one-man play, based on more than 500 letters exchanged between van Gogh and his brother, Theo. The play examines the artist's life and death as seen through his brother's eyes.
Theo is the principal character of the play as he struggles to convince a gathering of friends and colleagues that his brother was not, in fact, a lunatic or a madman.
Briggs, a Williamstown resident, is the founder of Starry Night Theater Company. He most recently played Hawkeye in "Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Drama" in Lake George, N.Y. He also has performed at Sun Valley Repertory Theatre, Potomac Theatre Project, Asolo Repertory Theatre and Williamstown Theater Festival.
Briggs is a graduate of Florida State University's Asolo Conservatory in Sarasota, Fla. He also studied theater at Middlebury College in Vermont. He attended Boston College Law School and spent many years as a practicing attorney in Boston, Pittsfield and Williamstown. He recently retired from the law to return to the theater.
Pope has a 30-year career in academic and professional theater. He is the chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas at Austin. He has directed at The John Houseman Theatre, Hartford Stage Company, Tennessee Repertory Theatre, and Park Square Theatre. For 11 years, he was director of the FSU Asolo Conservatory and associate artistic director of the Asolo Theatre Company in Sarasota, Fla.
