The modern-day adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories stars Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch, two of the hottest (and busiest) British stars around. The show has been on the air since 2010, but erratically so, as it attempts to navigate the other commitments of its leads. You know, little things like Cumberbatch's role in Star Trek Into Darkness (Khaaaaan!), Freeman in FX's just-concluded Fargo miniseries, Freeman and Cumber-
batch in the most recent Hobbit movie.
But it looks like everyone has found time for another season and a bonus episode! Producers confirmed last week that the London-set show about mystery-solving savant Sherlock Holmes (Cumberbatch) and his pal John Watson (Freeman) will return with a special one-off episode AND a fourth season, which, in typical British TV fashion, will run three supersized episodes.
Co-creator Mark Gatiss (who also plays Sherlock's brother on the show) said in a statement: "Series Four! At last! It's always special to return to Sherlock but this time it's even more special as we're doing a Special! Not only that, we'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before The whole ‘Sherlock' team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on again!"
No dates have been confirmed yet, but just a few days ago Freeman said the show will likely be back in 2015 for a Christmas special.
Never seen the show? Well, there's no excuse. With that 2015 date, you have plenty of time to catch up.
