A BEAUTIFUL NOW (R): Drama about a dancer poised between reality and fantasy. 1 hour 30 minutes. LC

BAD MOMS (R): Three moms at the end of their tethers decide to start saying 'no' to things. The comedy has so many opportunities to be great, edgy and insightful but instead settles for the most milquetoast commentary possible on modern motherhood. BEN-HUR (PG-13): Falsely accused of treason, a prince of Judea endures years of slavery to exact revenge against the Roman commander — a childhood friend — who brought the charges against him and destroyed his family. This reboot feels like an abbreviated, more Christ-centered take on William Wyler's 1959 multiple-Oscar winning epic. The violence is more graphic and the film also is 1 hour and 40 minutes shorter. But where Wyler's version is ultimately about family and unrequited romance, director Timur Bekmambetov is more interested in redemption and the words of Jesus Christ. Jack Huston, Tobey Kebbell, Morgan Freeman. 2 hours 5 minutes.

FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (PG-13): Meryl Streep stars as a tune-challenged 1940s socialite whose ambition to become an opera star far outstripped her skills. Based on a true story, the film is almost as tone deaf as its heroine (filled by Streep with emotion, humanity and need). It champions artificiality in an era of authenticity and seems sympathetic to the clueless babble that vast amounts of money can create. With Hugh Grant. 1 hour 50 minutes. BC / CT / TC

HANDS OF STONE (R): Legendary trainer Ray Arcel comes out of retirement at age 72 to coach and mentor Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran and eventually prepare him for his bout against undefeated lightweight champion Sugar Ray Leonard. With Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez. 1 hour 45 minutes. BC

JASON BOURNE (PG-13): The spy is back in action fighting a menacing network that uses technology to wield terror. SAUSAGE PARTY (R): Suddenly aware that they are fodder for humans, all the perishable food items on the shelves of a neighborhood grocery market devise a scheme to avoid their fate. Co-writers and co-producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have used their singular and delightfully twisted imaginations to once more concoct what is easily the year's most audacious film. There is no one out there making comedies quite like Rogen and Goldberg. They are putting their definitive stamp on the modern American comedy one decency-smashing double entendre at a time. With the voices of Seth Rogen, Edward Norton, Kristen Wiig. • (Bahr, The Associated Press — Aug. 13). 1 hour 29 minutes. BM / NAM

SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU (PG-13): Nuanced and charming, this film about the fateful first date between future U.S. President Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) and lawyer Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) is a sunny, strolling odyssey through African American life in 1989, filtered through two future icons as they navigate the world around them and their place in it.
