FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (PG-13): Meryl Streep stars as a tune-challenged 1940s socialite whose ambition to become an opera star far outstripped her skills. Based on a true story, the film is almost as tone deaf as its heroine (filled by Streep with emotion, humanity and need). It champions artificiality in an era of authenticity and seems sympathetic to the clueless babble that vast amounts of money can create. With Hugh Grant. 1 hour 50 minutes. BC / TC

HANDS OF STONE (R): Legendary trainer Ray Arcel comes out of retirement at age 72 to coach and mentor Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran and eventually prepare him for his bout against undefeated welterweight champion Sugar Ray Leonard. PETE'S DRAGON (PG): Live-action reboot of the 1977 animated fantasy-adventure about a 10-year-old orphan who lives in the Oregon woods with a giant, friendly dragon and a young girl who sets out to find them. Quiet, sweetly sincere, "Pete's Dragon" has been confidently reborn as an earnest tale of green-winged wonder that maintains the feel of an American fable. SAUSAGE PARTY (R): Suddenly aware that they are fodder for humans, all the perishable food items on the shelves of a neighborhood grocery market devise a scheme to avoid their fate. Co-writers and co-producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have used their singular and delightfully twisted imaginations to once more concoct what is easily the year's most audacious film. There is no one out there making comedies quite like Rogen and Goldberg. They are putting their definitive stamp on the modern American comedy one decency-smashing double entendre at a time.
