SPRINGFIELD — Three Berkshire County teams, led by Hennessy League champion St. Joseph's, earned slots in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 hockey tournament.

St. Joseph's is the seventh-seed in the 12-team field, while Hennessy runner-up Taconic High is eighth and Mount Greylock is 12th.

The tournament begins on Tuesday with preliminary round games at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield. The Olympia will host all the games until the final, which is scheduled for the MassMutual Center (the former Springfield Civic Center) on Saturday, March 11.

St. Joseph's coach Darin Lane said that he was pretty satisifed with his team's seed and its schedule.

"We're happy with the seventh seed, but we missed an opportunity to do better," he said. "We're happy with playing Central. You can't get worried about a Berry Division team later in the tournament, because you'll get blown away early."

The Crusaders will face 10th-seeded Springfield Central in Tuesday's first game. St. Joe enters the fray with a 11-5-3 record while Central is 11-6-3. Lane said that his team needs to get its edge back for the tournament.

"Winning the league early, our kids kind of lost some intensity," said Lane.

The Braves and Mounties will begin their tournament play on Wednesday.

Greylock (11-9) earned the 12th sed and faces No. 5 Chicopee Comp (13-5-1) at 6 p.m. Taconic (12-5-3), the eighth seed, will face No. 9 Chicopee (10-8-2) in Wednesday's finale.

If St. Joe wins, it'll play second-seeded Longmeadow in a Thursday quarterfinal. The winner of Taconic-Chicopee faces top-seeded Westfield in a quarterfinal on Saturday, while the Greylock-Comp winner will get No. 4 Minnechaug.
