This session is the first time mentors and "protégés" are introduced and interviewed. Before the end of the hour, future site visits will be scheduled.
The mentor program is a requirement for junior students enrolled in one of the academies at Pittsfield or Taconic high schools. Now in its seventh year, Berkshire Academies offer career opportunities by placing the students in a pre-arranged job experience with a professional mentor.
Once the student protégés are paired with professionals, a period of eight weeks will provide in-depth opportunities for job sharing, involving the students with realistic experiences such as attending a board meeting, learning how to plan for an event, or managing a business.
The kick-off event follows an educational session held earlier in the month that detailed the responsibilities to be maintained by the students during the minimum of 10 hours in the workplace. The session stressed the importance of professional dress and professional courtesy.
