LENOX — The Lenox Police Department is in the process of sending out notices to town landowners and residents to deal with junk or unregistered or dilapidated motor vehicles on their property.

According to Chief Stephen E. O'Brien, the vehicles are in violation of a town bylaw.

The town is offering three options, said O'Brien. The first is to screen the vehicle from view by a permanent means. This can be either vegetation, a fence or by moving the vehicle behind a structure.

The second way is to remove the vehicle from the property. To that end, the Lenox Police Department provided two flyers that will enable vehicle owners to have their vehicles picked up. The non-profit groups, the National Kidney Foundation and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, both have such programs.

O'Brien added that residents can also register the vehicle.

Residents and landowners who receive the notices will have 30 days to comply with the bylaw upon receipt of the notice. If the situation remains unaddressed, he said, the town will sign a complaint to pursue the violation through the courts. The town can fine an automobile owner up to $50 for every day of non-compliance.
