LENOX — The Community Development Corp. of Southern Berkshire and the Lenox Affordable Housing Corp. will be holding a planning session on the Saw Mill Brook affordable housing project tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Trinity Church Parish House on Walker Street.

The session, according to Deborah Burke, president of the Lenox Affordable Housing Corp., will focus on the plot plan of the development: How structures and roads will be situated on the land. It is the next step in the feasibility study process, determining whether the project can be financially viable and acceptable to the community, she said.

"This is a step where financial feasibility meets land feasibility," said Burke. "Can we lay out the buildings so the land is used well, and the community supports the project? Will enough trees remain, and will it fit into the neighborhood?"

"This is the next critical step in the feasibility process," said CDC member Mike Wilser. "We know we should build it, and that we can build it. Now we have to look at how to build it in the best way."

The two groups are presently working on a plan to develop a 19-acre parcel on the corner of Housatonic Street, located across the street from E. Caligari and Son Inc.

Although the term "affordable housing" is a relatively elastic one, the local group is seeking to build a complex that would, in theory, provide housing for younger

members of the community to enable them to live and work in Lenox.

The property that has been singled out, at the intersection of Route 7 and Housatonic Street, has been targeted by a number of developers over the last several years. Most recently, a proposal to build a Marriott Hotel was voted down by the town's Zoning Board of Appeals in 2006.
