As current visitors to the Berkshires, we read the May 4 Berkshire Eagle and the article following the bold headline, "Shrine gets holy cloth." I had to check the calendar to make sure that this wasn't a bad April Fool's Day joke or had perhaps found its way into the wrong publication.
We know John Paul II was a good Pope and very human. But after we read about the celebration of his blood-soaked bit of cloth being enshrined, no doubt for future worship and "miracles," we were appalled (forgive the pun), as he surely would have been, both by its inclusion in a general readership newspaper and a topic that belongs to medieval lore and superstition.
