Wally Boyer writes a good letter July 30 fueled by wondering "what is wrong with U. S.?" Many of us are wondering the same. I don’t have all the answers, nor does anyone. But, changing some things in our lives helps us get closer to answers.
TV is perhaps one of the most destructive factors contributing to this country’s failings. I kicked the TV habit 15 years ago, and since have become so much more in formed. When it comes to learning of the daily news you need to know about, television is not going to inform you about anything relevant. The power of the written word is what will serve you the truth, because you decipher what’s up, not someone else’s emotions in their voice. Read two or three newspapers each morning and before long you’ll figure out who is full of it and who isn’t.
Read Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity transcripts instead of listening to them and you’ll think your reading rejected issues of MAD magazine. Follow that with transcripts of, say, the Chautauqua Institute lectures and learn about things that affect everyone whether your right, left or neutral.
Mr. Boyer voices his disdain for Obama with this statement, "our president is apologizing for our country around the world and does not think it’s people are exceptional." How can anyone think our people (assuming he is referring to Americans) are exceptional? We the people are responsible for government becoming out of control.
We do nothing here but complain, not just about the government, but also about each other, which TV and talk radio succeed so well in making us do. Throw that TV away and read! Or be quiet and go play, just like your mother told you to.
