I am appalled that the Westboro Baptist Church plans on protesting the funeral of U.S. Army Pfc. Michael R. DeMarsico II of North Adams. What could possibly be the reason this Kansas-based group wants to protest a military funeral?

According to reports this group justifies its presence at military funeral by saying "soldiers are dying for the homosexual and other sins of America." Really? Soldiers are not dying for the sins of America. Soldiers are dying to protect America, including the religious freedoms that this organization is so blessed to have. Many of us are not happy with the military engagements our country is involved with throughout the world, but regardless of how we personally feel, we must stand behind our soldiers.

Furthermore, I am appalled at their past demonstrations of burning the Koran. I support religious freedom, but not at the expense of intentionally hurting another’s religion and saying your actions are "for God." God does not teach hatred, God teaches love, regardless if you agree with someone or not. I am a Catholic, a convert at that. I work for a local Catholic organization in Stockbridge.

Every day I work to educate that Jesus is The Divine Mercy. This so-called Christian organization should model itself after Jesus and have compassion for Michael DeMarsico. This man died not just for our country but for others to live in peace. So why can’t the members of the Westboro Church let him rest in peace? God Bless America.
