I have a friend who is disabled and on Social Security who owes Western Mass Electric $99 and received an overdue shut-off notice. It is planning on shutting off her electricity on Sept. 29. She receives her check on the third of each month and asked for a four-day extension which she had gotten once before. They denied her another extension because she had already received an extension which she had paid on the date which was agreed to.

If she is not granted an extension she’ll have to not only pay the $99 but also have to pay a reconnection fee. Is this how our society allows utilities to take advantage of elderly and disabled citizens? They and we should be ashamed of ourselves for allowing these practices to be perpetuated against our elderly and disabled.
