When a high gust of wind felled a mature pine tree into Sackett Brook we feared the worst. The fallen tree spanned the brook, blocking passage of the water through the culvert under the roadway. Prior experience warned us that as soon as the anticipated rains came, the obstructing tree would cause the brook to rise over the roadway, flooding local houses and making passage of traffic impossible. Only immediate removal of the tree could prevent this from happening.

Fortunately, our neighbors and Pittsfield’s emergency re sponders were responsive to our calls for help. This oc curred during the Hurricane Sandy storm of Monday, Oct. 29. We wish to express our appreciation to City Council President Kevin Sherman, who made the calls for help and saved us from what could have been a disaster; Superinten dent for the Department of Public Services Peter Bruneau and his crew, who as Kevin said, were Exhibit A of the city’s hard-working and dedicated workers, and Tony Stra cuzzi for his quick response to Kevin and the offering of his services. Our loyal and wonderful neighbors, including Todd Drury and Dan DeMar co, and the highway department crew that did a tremendous job picking up the downed limbs and branches following the storm also deserve our kudos.
