An excellent article and interview with local author/ journalist Bob Reiss appears in the January issue of Berkshire Trade and Commerce. Reiss, the author of "The Eskimo and the Oil Man: The Battle at the Top of the World for America’s Future," will speak at the Berkshire Museum on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. His book is based on his interviews with the mayor of Barrow, Alaska and the Shell Oil Alaska Venture executive, as well as his extensive involvement at the Arctic Imperative Summit and various economic, political, defense, and environmental meetings.
With the melting of the Arctic ice and the opening of new sea passages, change in the Arctic is happening that will affect us all. Are you interested in environmental protection? In energy exploration? In protecting the Inupiat Eskimo way of life? In international commerce? In military defense operations? Reiss’ book enlightens us on these topics, as personally experienced by the Eskimo and the oil man. It is a call for both deliberation and action that is urgent, yet for the future.
I hope you will join me at Bob Reiss’ presentation on Jan. 16. And I wish to thank Jane Winn of Berkshire Environmental Action Team and Craig Langlois of Berkshire Museum, for sponsoring this important evening.
