Many excellent letters to the editor have been written on the subject of a need to get automatic weapons and other multi-fire guns out of the reach of all but the armed forces. Much has been said about the devastation and heartbreak caused by one man carrying such weapons into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. I don’t think there is anything I can say along those lines that hasn’t already been said better than I could.
But I would like to ask one simple question of those who are pro-gun, pro-Second Amendment rights: Why do you personally need to own an assault rifle or other automatic weapon? Give me one situation in which you, as an ordinary citizen not in the armed forces, need to own a gun that can fire hundreds of bullets in a few seconds, a gun designed to mow down multiple enemies in a combat situation?
Deer hunting? A home invasion by one or two people? Target practice? A grouse/ duck/turkey shoot? No. It would seem that you want to own such a weapon partly because you feel you have the right to. You have no need of one, but by golly, you’re going to get one, just to prove that you can’t be pushed around by some bleeding heart liberal.
So just fill in the blank and mail it in: "I need to own an assault rifle or other automatic weapon because Š"
