Yet another article about the possible impact of video violence, this time under the absolutely ridiculous guise of helping the players who aren’t up on the news to understand what is going on in Syria. ("Video game puts players in Syrian rebels’ shoes.") Tomas Rawlings, who designed the game, foolishly claims that those who don’t want to read newspapers (Can you imagine?) will find this a way to "find out about things." Of course, the 60,000 or so dead and mutilated bodies are just steps along the way to their understanding -- kind of like landing on "Luxury Tax" or "Go to Jail" before ultimately passing "GO" and going on to win in the game of Monopoly.
To quote Charles Schulz: "Good grief, Charlie Brown." Even Snoopy would be amazed at this warped way we humans think.
I am taken back to the closing days of World War II, when as a 9-year-old, I was given a quarter’s worth of pennies which would last me for hours in the penny arcade on the Boardwalk in Coney Island; each game costing no more than a penny.
I would always devote a few of those pennies to a game where I was able to shoot at a diorama with moving figures of Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini. My "bullets" were only beams of light which if landing on a circle on the arms of these evil men only turned them around. No blood, nor gore, while this nine year old did his part to end the war.
Children are too young and innocent to understand the horrors of warfare.
