Thank you for your timely and informative Feb. 26 article about genetically modified foods and Berkshire Organics in Dalton. It is so refreshing to read about a retailer who is courageous enough to care about selling quality food to its customers.
Food in the United States has been changed on a molecular level through genetic modification without our knowledge or consent. It is difficult to know which foods are altered and which are not because in the United States GMO foods are not required to be labeled. GMO stands for genetically modified organisms. Sixty-one nations of the world ban and/or label GMO foods. There are the only two industrial nations that do not require labeling -- the United States and Canada .
It is time for Massachusetts’ citizens to have the same informed freedom of choice as residents living under oppressive governments like China and Russia. GMO Foods in Russia and China are labeled, giving residents in those countries the right to know what is in the food they purchase, eat and feed to their families. In the United States, we need to have the same "right to know’’ freedoms enjoyed by the Russians and Chinese.
If you are concerned about what is happening to our food and the resulting health and environmental issues, please consider joining Massachusetts Right To Know GMOs (MARightToKnow.org), a statewide organization working with our legislators to pass laws requiring mandatory labeling of GMO foods in Massachusetts.
