Why did the secular media interrupt regular programming to go to breaking news from the Vatican? Why were millions of eyes fixated on the balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square? Who was this man about to emerge? This is who he is: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church," (Mt. 16:18).
Pope Francis is the successor to Peter and Vicar of Christ. It was to Peter (and now Francis) that Jesus gave the keys to the kingdom of Heaven. It was the Catholic Church that started the education and health care system in the West. It’s the Catholic Church that has been serving the poor for 2,000 years.
It was Pope John Paul II’s great work that helped free Poland from Communist rule and bring down the Berlin Wall. It was the Catholic Church that hid Jews from the Nazis and saved countless lives. We have withstood the attacks of the Roman Empire, Vandals, Barbarians, Nazis, Communists, radical relativists, etc., and still stand strong! Yes, it’s good to be Catholic!
Jesus gave the guarantee to Peter (Pope) that the "gates of Hell will not prevail." It was only Peter that Jesus told to feed His sheep." It was to only Peter that Jesus said, "I have prayed for you that your faith will not fail." (Lk. 22:32). And Jesus sent the Catholic Church the spirit of truth to guide it to all truth (Jn. 16:13).
This is why the Church can infallibly declare that abortion and homosexual relations are grave sins. It’s why it can doctrinally declare the all-male priesthood, which cannot be changed since priests are in persona Christi (in the person of Christ, who is true God and true man). It is the Catholic Church that is the "pillar and bulwark of truth," (1 Tm. 3:15) so we don’t have to "church hop" when we have the One, Holy and Apostolic Church founded by Christ. We will continue to be a contradiction to the world, while the world continues to ask like Pilate, "What is truth?"
So if you’ve been away from the Church, please consider coming home. It’s a hospital for sinners, led by sinners. Jesus is truly present body, blood, soul and divinity in the Holy Eucharist.
He is here in the confessional waiting to set you free from guilt and sin and say, "Your sins are forgiven, go in peace." (Jn 20:23).
Yes, it’s very good to be Catholic!
