Within the last several weeks, there have been a number of distressing reports in The Eagle. A woman was killed in a carjacking, and the victim’s 10-year-old daughter reportedly raped. At his sentencing, T.J. Lane, who was found guilty of killing three fellow students, wore a T-shirt with "killer" scrawled across it, defiantly mocking the parents of the slain student. And the court-martial conviction of rape against Lt. Col. James Wilkinson was dismissed by Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin.

Unfortunately, the exploits of psychotic males have become common fare for the newspaper reader. This plethora of violence against women speaks for a sexism beyond the economic issues of pay and occupational equity. A society that fails to protect its women and children is one in which the most basic elements of the social contract are being breached.

It is time the leaders of this country realize that the women in this country face terror on a daily basis. If Polly Klaas was not safe at a pajama party in her own house, where is a woman safe in America?

Bring the troops home, hire 20,000 female detectives, and declare war on the real terror on our shores -- criminally psychotic males who prey on females of all ages.
