I am writing in response to George T. Beebe’s letter of April 15 in which he wrote that he shares the view of Mark Lynas that genetically modified crops are environmentally safe. I wish to thank Mr. Beebe for his letter because it completely reinforces what our April 22 rally is about.

Mr. Beebe feels that he has adequately researched the topic and based on that, he has decided what he will plant on his farm and he knows exactly what he and his family will eat. Although I do not share Mr. Beebe’s opinion, I do respect his right to choose. We would all like to have that completely American right, the right to know and make our own intelligent choices.

Unfortunately, most of us do not have our own farms. Consequently, when we walk into a grocery store, we do not know what is or isn’t genetically modified food. Some of us may have health issues which make food choices particularly important; others may be very concerned about what they are feeding their children.

We all have a right to know what is in the food we purchase so that we can make our own intelligent decisions about what we are comfortable with. That is what the rally is about. Whether you decide GMO foods are safe, or not, there is no legitimate reason why they shouldn’t be labeled.
