To the editor of THE EAGLE:

Mr. Curtain of Tyringham seems to believe that folks who pay taxes make better elected officials ("Back those who pay taxes," letter, May 15.) I don't know if that is the case, but as a landlord for the past 20 years, I can tell you that all of my tenants have been taxpayers. They pay me rent, and I use the rent to pay expenses, such as repairs, my mortgage, insurance -- and yes, taxes.

Now, Tyringham is a pretty expensive place to live, and some really good folks may be priced out of the ownership market, yet are able to rent. Those folks make Tyringham their home and as such should be entitled to fully participate in all of what it takes to be a resident of a community.

That includes running for office. I believe that being a white, male, Christian land owner stopped being a qualifier for elected office in Massachusetts long before any of us were born. I am sure there are good and residents of Tyringham and their ownership of property has nothing to do with that status.
