To the editor of THE EAGLE:

The North Adams Housing Authority ("NAHA") would like to thank North Adams Police Director Michael Cozzaglio, the North Adams Police Department and the Berkshire County Law Enforcement Group for their efforts culminating in last Monday's arrest of three people on charges involving a Class B drug; namely, cocaine. ("Police raid on North Adams apartment leads to three arrests for cocaine" Eagle, June 2).

Unfortunately, the dangers, harm and pain associated with illicit drug use continue to pervade our society. Those ills extend to public housing. The issues associated with criminal drug use are among the primary concerns of NAHA residents and, in turn, those concerns are critically important to the NAHA. As such, the NAHA is diligently continuing in its efforts to address tenant concerns and to provide safe and peaceful homes for its residents.

For example, the NAHA, in collaboration with the NAPD, the Berkshire County Drug Task Force, and other federal, state, and local entities, recently purchased and implemented a state-of-the-art camera system to monitor its properties for criminal activity. The system provides a direct feed to the NAPD.

The NAHA's hope and expectation is that this measure, taken together with its other efforts to stem the tide of drug-related harm, will help the NAHA to fulfill its mission to make the health, safety and welfare of its residents its utmost priority.
