To the editor of THE EAGLE:
There are many people in our community who are schizophrenic or who have illnesses related to delusions, voices and so on. They are more likely to be victims of crime than perpetuate crime.
There are so many ways people can get help. The unfortunate truth is, people with paranoia don't often trust their treatment. And yet, there is a movement toward wellness and recovery. This seems to be the most effective way of handling people's mental illness.
Medication helps because it is a chemical, genetic problem. There are choices and options. There is help for the ill person and their families, and it is sad when someone chooses not to be treated.
I know someone who was philosophically opposed to taking medication, and every time he took himself off he ended up hospitalized for erratic behavior. He wasn't violent, just confused. The answer to a complex issue can sometimes be simple. Take your meds!
