To the editor of THE EAGLE:
Thanks going out to Dr. Lee Silverman who made the right decision by legally arming himself. He shot convicted felon Richard Plotts who opened fire at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pa. last week, saving not only his own life, but countless others as well. Had Dr. Silverman followed the hospital’s policy of "no guns allowed," he and others would be dead. Most likely the 39 rounds left in Plotts’ pocket would have found other targets.
The hospital policy prohibits law-abiding citizens with the legal right to carry a concealed weapon to do so. The hospital has not to my knowledge disclosed its reasons for having such a policy, nor can I find any information regarding how it intends to protect the staff. Disarming law-abiding citizens and taking away their legal right to carry a concealed weapon puts the hospital staff and patients in an unsafe environment. The staff and patients are at the mercy of any criminal or crazed gunman who decides to attack the unarmed hospital.
Thankfully, Dr. Silverman used common sense and was able to think for himself. He didn’t let Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital take away his right to defend and protect himself, his coworkers, or the patients.
