To the editor of THE EAGLE:
An easy way to support Berkshire County veterans is to avoid setting off backyard fireworks, which have continued in my neighborhood since before the Fourth of July.
For many veterans, especially those who have served in combat and/or those who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, the smells and sounds associated with these explosions are triggers that take them back to horrific situations that the rest of us can’t even imagine. This can cause them hours or days of unrest, anxiety, panic attacks and sleeplessness.
Fireworks are also often disturbing and traumatic for anyone who has lived in or near a war zone, the elderly, particularly those with dementia and Alzheimer’s, and animals. They are illegal for private citizens to use, possess, or sell in Massachusetts.
Please consider your neighbors who may suffer negative consequences before setting off backyard fireworks.
