To the editor:

On Dec. 22, I was working out at the Pittsfield YMCA when the fire alarm went off at around 10 a.m. The staff quickly ushered us down from the upper floors to the lobby and many were already outside. I noticed all the children from ages of under one to about five coming from the day care center and up from the pool area in their wet suits and towels. Some were very upset and crying from the piercing fire alarm which lasted about 10 minutes and the sight of the fire trucks and of course some loved all the excitement.

I stood there watching all these children being professionally, compassionately and lovingly taken care of by Director Randy Kinnas and his wonderful staff. Every one of these kids had an adult helping and directing them where to go and stand.

If I were a parent or guardian with a small child in the care of the YMCA staff I would go to work every day knowing how safe, secure and protected they are. I am very proud to say that I am a member of the Pittsfield YMCA.
