Ted Cruz on target about liberal values
To the editor:
I am a New Yorker having lived for 10 years in the midst of the beautiful Berkshire mountains.
Regarding the Republican presidential debate of Jan. 14, Sen. Ted Cruz in speaking about liberal values noted that Massachusetts legally married the first same sex couple in the nation and New York was the first state to legalize abortion. Artificial contraception, abortion and same-sex marriage are grave offenses against God, the creator of human life. For this reason, human life is sacred.
Freedom of religion is now being tested in the US Supreme Court, which last November took up the case of the Little Sisters of The Poor who care for the frail, elderly people and are opposed to providing contraception for their employees under the tenets of the Affordable Care Act.
The recent presidential debate offered insight into how conservative each Republican candidate is in his and her words and actions. Sen. Cruz spoke the truth. That is genuine compassion. New York and Massachusetts values are liberal.
The heroism of New Yorkers manifested to the world during the attack on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 does not dispel the evil of abortion as candidate Donald Trump suggested. Our nation's indifference to protecting the sacredness of human life contributed to our diminished vigilance to safeguard our people, and terrorists entered.
Until our nation restores value and commitment to the words we speak in the Pledge of Allegiance — "one nation, under God" — can we expect human life to prosper and live in peace?
May God have mercy on us and the whole world.
