End pay, benefits for Dalton board

The Dalton Select Board should set an example for good fiscal responsibility by eliminating all financial compensation for Select Board members. Dalton already has a large outstanding debt. The Select Board needs to work on the next budget to reduce this debt. Dalton should not be planning to borrow any more money.
Dalton has a town manager and an assistant who handle day to day operations. The five Select Board members cost the town tens of thousands of dollars a year. In addition, Select Board members are eligible for health benefits which can add a minimum of $8,400 per Select Board member each year.
Many Dalton residents volunteer their time to help their community. Some give hours weekly, others monthly. These residents serve on town committees, boards and commissions. They serve lunches, pay for food for community lunches, plant flowers, protect our environment, and they do all this without any compensation. This is commendable. The Select Board should follow this example.
