BHRSD finding ways to avoid regionalizing
To the editor:
Kudos to the Berkshire Hills Regional School District for solving the problem of raising taxes without upsetting the taxpayers. Knowing that nothing will ever come from all the talk of sharing superintendents, purchasing supplies with other school districts and the creme-de-la-creme of regionalizing with the Southern Berkshire Regional School District, which could be absorbed into Berkshire Hills with little difficulty, the committee decided to eliminate a very popular position of band director knowing there are only a few areas that cannot be cut in schools.
Music, art and sports are sacrosanct. The retirement of one of Berkshire Hills best teachers played right into the committee's hands. Parents, teachers and students stormed the committee's next meeting. We're not sure what will happen in the future, but it is a great bet that the position will be around for a long time.
Maybe its time the taxpayers of both school districts defeat every budget until a concrete plan to regionalize is signed. Both districts have great programs. Just imagine what could be saved and what programs could be offered.
