Hate, paranoia will wreck US from within
To the editor:
There is obviously great concern that terrorists can be found in the American Muslim community, and that more terrorists will be among the pending Muslim immigrants who will be allowed into the country in the near future. We must therefore find ways to police this population if we are to forestall further attacks on American soil.
Ted Cruz has proposed patrolling Muslim communities but this is obviously unworkable and preposterous, even if allowed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Among other things, the president cannot order state and local law enforcement to institute patrols, and where would the manpower come from and how would it be funded? Not a good idea.
Another solution comes from WWII when we forced American citizens of Japanese ancestry into barbed wire internment camps. While many see this as a desperately unfair, racist, embarrassing, and illegal abrogation of our laws and our much-touted values, we do face threats and some people may want to use former military bases to accommodate many thousands. But ludicrous and, again, another reprehensible stain.
However, there is a simple, inexpensive, solution from Nazi German: require all Muslims to wear a yellow star! Perhaps we could even require a star on license plates, and homes. Of course we'd have to work out accommodation for Muslims in our police forces across the country – there are 900 in New York City alone – and also accommodate the Muslims in all branches of our military.
Or perhaps, best of all, we should go back to the Constitution and work to live up to the rights stated therein: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof "
Not only should we be living up to the standards we have espoused for over 200 years, but reviling, demeaning, hating and attacking Muslims makes Americans and America, across the globe, the world's greatest hypocrite! Our Islamaphobia helps ISIS recruit young, disaffected, insulted and understandably angry young people here in America and across other nations. On recent stamps we claim: "Equality Forever, Justice Forever, Freedom Forever, Liberty Forever." Great sentiments, but not true.
So let us heed this advice and work together to make America, again a moral world leader: America will never be destroyed from the outside. "If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." — Abraham Lincoln.
