Swashbuckling 'Pirates' an excellent showcase
To the editor:
I recently attended a performance of the operetta "The Pirates of Penzance" performed by Barrington Stage Company. As a singer and performer, I thoroughly enjoyed the amazing talent in this show. Although The Eagle review by Jeffrey Borak was mostly favorable, I would like to add a few comments.
This was quite a showcase for excellent singing, dancing and comedy! Truly outstanding was the Pirate King (Will Swenson) with such a huge, warm, gorgeous voice! His partner Mable (Scarlett Strallen) possessed a lovely, agile soprano voice that soared higher and higher but delivered warmth when needed.
The other solo roles and ensembles were beautifully sung and danced with great artistic precision. Please know that as time goes on much more than just singing is being required of professional singers on stage. Tremendous vocal, acting, physical and mental preparation are required to perform these roles. Dancing, running, jumping, sword fighting, and singing up in a ship's rigging are just a normal day's work for an operetta pirate!
"Pirates" is a must-see and the set is a fun surprise! Not many more days left for this great show! (It runs through August 13.)
