STOCKBRIDGE -- Firefighters from five communities were called out Monday to fight a large, spreading fire in the Interlaken part of town. There were no injuries.

The blaze was called in at about 12:21 p.m., according to Fire Chief Louis Peyron. The fire started somewhere off Averic Road and shifted south toward the Massachusetts Turnpike and Route 102.

Peyron noted that the country in that part of town is hilly and rugged.

"The men were climbing all over those hills out there," said Peyron. "It was really tough."

Firefighters from Lenox, West Stockbridge, Alford and Great Barrington were called to the scene.

In addition, more than 1,500 feet of hose was laid to carry water from the hydrant near the Berkshire Botanical Gardens to the blaze, said Peyron.

"We shuttled a lot of water to the scene," he said.

The fire, which eventually covered several acres, took almost seven hours to put out, said Peyron.
