PITTSFIELD -- A 26-year-old Great Barrington man pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to kidnapping and assault and battery charges for allegedly keeping his girlfriend from leaving his house, hitting her in the mouth and chasing her through the streets of Great Barrington.

In Central Berkshire District Court, Cody Kickery was arraigned on felony kidnapping and misdemeanor assault and battery. He was released by Judge Rita S. Koenigs on $500 cash bail.

Just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Kickery allegedly threw his 25-year-old girlfriend onto his bed after she tried to leave his house, split her lip by hitting her with his head and then chased the woman after she escaped the house, according to police and prosecutors.

Great Barrington Police said they received a 911 call from the woman while she was running from Kickery. She said Kickery chased her around the Southern Berkshire District Courthouse and onto State Road.

Police arrived at Hillside Avenue and witnessed the chase, according to a police report. The woman was placed in a police cruiser for her protection, but Kickery escaped, police said. He was arrested about an hour later near his home by a Sheffield police officer who was assisting in the investigation. Kickery allegedly resisted arrest and was pepper sprayed.

The alleged victim later told police Kickery had been drinking that night.
