Hevreh of Southern Berkshire will host Rabbi Dennis Ross at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, when he speaks about his new book, "Religion, Politics and Sex -- Then and Today: A Conversation for Polite Company."
It was illegal to distribute birth control when the first family planning clinic opened in a Brooklyn storefront in 1916. Yet many rabbis supported access to safe and affordable contraception.
Ross, director of Concerned Clergy for Choice, consultant to Planned Parenthood, and author of "All Politics Is Religious: Speaking Faith to the Media, Policy Makers and Community," recently released by SkyLight Paths/Jewish Lights Publishing, will discuss how rabbis, alongside other clergy, led the nation to make birth control available and the lessons for today.
