The Rev. James Hazelwood, bishop of the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will preach at an ecumenical Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Zion Lutheran Church, 74 First St.

Hazelwood, who was consecrated bishop in September 2012, will visit Zion as a part of his 180+ parish tour across the New England states. Earlier in the week, he will visit several other Lutheran parishes in western Massachusetts.

Ash Wednesday’s service is an ecumenical collaboration among First Congregational, South Congregational, First Baptist, First United Methodist, and Zion Lutheran churches.

Clergy and participants from each of these churches will join together in prayer, song, and the imposition of ashes. The Rev. James Lumsden, pastor at First Congregational Church, will preside at Holy Communion.

Musical leadership will include Zion’s Jazz Vespers trio, led by the Rev. Andrew Barnett, piano, along with Andy Wrba, bass, and Bill Chapman, drums.
