GREAT BARRINGTON -- A retirement ceremony was held to honor the Navy career of Lt. Cmdr. Matthew T. Atwood on May 4. In attendance were Atwood's family, friends and shipmates.

Guest speaker was Troy J. Mueller, director of Nuclear Technology Division from Naval Reactors in Washington, D.C.

During the ceremony, Atwood was presented with a Governor's Citation in recognition of his dedicated service to the Navy and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts signed by Gov. Deval Patrick and Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray.

Atwood was also presented with the meritorious Service Medal awarded by the President Barack Obama.

Atwood is the son of Thomas Atwood of Great Barrington and Maura Heath of Port Orange, Fla. He entered the Navy in June 1984 from Great Barrington. Following boot camp and Machinist's Mate "A" School at the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill., he reported to Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Fla., and then prototype training at the Nuclear Power Training Unit, Ballston Spa, N.Y.

Atwood then reported to the USS Dallas followed by instructor duty at the Nuclear Power Training Unit, Ballston Spa. In 1993, he was selected by Admiral DeMars to serve at the West Milton Field Office as a Naval Reactors Technical Assistant.

In July 1996, Atwood reported to the Pre-Commissioning Unit Seawolf for duty followed by the Assistant Naval Sea Systems Command Technical Representative Office in Schenectady, N.Y.. On Jan. 1, 1998, he was commissioned as an ensign in the Limited Duty Officer Program.

Subsequent tours of duty included the West Milton (N.Y.) Field Office, the Assistant Naval Sea System Command Technical Representative Office and the Naval Reactors Laboratory Field Office, both in Schenectady.

Atwood has been awarded two Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, four Good Conduct Medals, Global War on Terrorism Medal, South West Asia Service Medal, two National Defense Service Medals, three Meritorious Unit Commendations, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
