PITTSFIELD -- A plaque-dedication ceremony honoring the contributions of the late John C. Marchesi, a longtime employee of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, was held July 27 at the Doyle Softball Complex on Benedict Road. Marchesi, who passed away in 2012, served as the director of recreation from 1956 to 2002. A former Amateur Softball Association Massachusetts state commissioner, he was elected to the Massachusetts Softball Hall of Fame in Worcester in 1989.
Marchesi’s family, daughters Carol Marchesi and Diane Brewster, granddaughter Teresa Murnane, and great-grandsons Evan and Avery Zoschak, have issued the following statement:
"The Marchesi family is overwhelmed and would like to express our sincere gratitude to the city of Pittsfield and to the Parks Commission Committee for this dedication to John Marchesi, our dad. He would be very honored if he was here today. I also want to thank Tony Stracuzzi and his staff for their help; Rebecca Tefft, Jim McGrath, Andy McKeever from iBerkshires, it was all well appreciated; Mayor Daniel Bianchi for a wonderful presentation and being there with my family. Thank you. Also, Jim Stimpson from Pittsfield Girls Softball, Itam Lodge and UNICO, who contributed to creating the memorial plaque. It is extremely beautiful. I want to thank my wonderful friends for being there with my family."
