LEE -- The 54th annual Laliberte Toy Fund drive has topped the $8,000 mark thanks to $958.72 in donations received during Christmas week.
While toy fund organizers had set a goal of $5,000 and already bought and delivered gifts for 41 Lee-area children in 21 families prior to Christmas, they plan to roll over any unspent money toward next year’s fundraising campaign.
The holiday charity was established in 1958 by the late Edward Laliberte, a longtime Lee Police officer, Laliberte began the fund by initially repairing toys in his garage and then distributing them to disadvantaged youths. As demand grew for the toys, he began to accept donations from the public. The fund was renamed in his honor following his death in the 1980s.
Donations are still being accepted toward the 2014 fundraising campaign and can be mailed to the Laliberte Toy Fund, P.O. Box 559, Lee, MA 01238, or dropped off at any Lee Bank location.
