NORTH ADAMS -- Phillip E. Moore, of 38 Maple St., Adams, won a prize for proficiency in public speaking last night as a member of an evening class at Drury High School.
Moore, who is attending the Effective Speaking class being given by John Carlow, was awarded a new Dale Carnegie book on public speaking.
The book was presented by Mrs. Margaret LeRoche, also taking the course, after 23 members of the class voted that Moore had made the best speech of introduction.
NORTH ADAMS -- Master Sgt. Alice Kay Tew of the Northern Berkshire Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol was promoted last night to the rank of cadet second lieutenant.
Cadet Tew is the fourth cadet -- all of them women -- to be elevated to officer rank since the new training program started in 1959. Cadet Lt. Tew is a sophomore at the Bishop Memorial School of Nursing at Pittsfield General Hospital. 25 years ago today
WILLIAMSTOWN -- Five students at Mount Greylock Regional High School's Drama Company returned from the Berkshire Community College High School Drama Festival with an award for Production of Exceptional Merit. Christopher J. Beaulieu, Linda Faulkner, Jonathan Jones, Megan O'Connor and Christina Vestergaard, under the tutelage of Drama Director Linda H. White, performed a scaled-down version of British playwright Olwen Wymark's "Fine Me," at BCC on Saturday, Jan. 28 in Pittsfield.
WILLIAMSTOWN -- Williamstown Rotary Club members Art Wylde, Ed Briggs, Chris Brandy, President Jack Elder and Keith Wallace announced plans for the annual art auction to be held at the Williams Inn on Friday, Mar. 10. The club's major fundraiser benefits the O. Dixon and Jean Marshall Rotary Scholarship Fund. Current recipients are Sharon Alcaro who is attending the Hartt School of Music in Hartford; Michael Dolan, a freshman at Dean Junior College; Ellen O'Connor, Yale University; Kathleen O'Mara, a student at Rosemont College; and Deidre Spezeski, now at the Unviersity of Vermont -- all 1988 graduates of Mount Greylock Regional High School.

NORTH ADAMS -- City native Dan Johnson became the new champion of the North Berkshire Chess Club in the annual tournament held during its regular Wednesday night meetings, Jan. 7-28 at MASS MoCA.
Final results were: Johnson (3.5), Jeff Brassard (30), Ray Gaudette (2.5), Mike Shakar (1), Bill Montgomery (1), and Mike Day (0).
NORTH ADAMS -- McCann Tech senior Heather LaCasse scored her 1,000th point with 1 minute, 7 seconds left in the first half of Wednesday night's game against Westfield Vocational. She became the first female in school history to reach the milestone.
LaCasse became the fourth player at McCann to score 1,000 points. She joins Al Giorgi ('78), Neil Giorgi ('84) and Chris Bourdon ('97) in the exclusive club.
