WILLIAMSTOWN -- Robert J. Curry, a North Adams City Councilor, yesterday was re-elected president of the IUE local 299 of Cornish Wire. Albert Preite was elected vice president. Louis Ferris of North Adams won a three-way contest for chief shop steward, polling 219 votes to 198 for Francis Stanton of Williamstown and 41 for Albert Sprowson of North Adams.
STAMFORD -- U.S. Navy Seaman Peter A. Spencer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur E. Spencer of Main Rd., is currently serving a five-month tour of duty with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean.
Spencer, working with an underwater demolition team, will visit ports in Spain, France, Italy, Greece and several Mediterranean islands while with the Sixth Fleet.
He was graduated in 1961 from Drury High School.

NORTH ADAMS -- Local students joined Smokey the Bear and Larry Ray of the State Forest Fire Bureau with the awards they won for a poster contest.
The winners were Lisa Raymond, Jessica DeMarsico, Candice Auge, Serena Dassatti, Jill Richert, Colin LaCasse, and Bobbie-Jo Hurlburt.
POWNAL, Vt. -- Airman Todd M. Singleton, son of Richard J. Singleton and Kathleen Singleton, both of Pownal, has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Airman who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the community college of the Air Force.
Singleton is a 1988 graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vt.

POWNAL, Vt. -- The Solomon Wright Public Library board held its first meeting of the year Jan. 15 in the Community Room. New board members, Helen Rogers, Harvey Carter III, and Ruth Botzow, were welcomed. They join Helen Renner, Jeanne Overstreet, Julius Rosenwald, Andrew Dequasie and George Renner.
DALTON -- In the final Berkshire County cross country ski race of the season Saturday at Wahconah Regional High School, the Hoosac Valley boys’ cross country ski team won the relay competition to finish the regular season undefeated.
Dan Demers, Ben Garner, Steven Bedard and Shane MacDowell combined for the first-place finish at 43 minutes, 21 seconds -- 49 seconds better than second place Greylock.
