Lisa Lowe, professor of English and American studies at Tufts University, will present a lecture titled "The Intimacies of Four Continents" at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, in Griffin Hall, room 3, at Williams College.

The event is free and open to the public.

Lowe’s talk will focus on Chinese and South Asian indentured labor alongside British imperial expansion in Asia and Africa. Lowe will also consider the emergence of liberal ideas such as emancipation, free wage labor, and free trade, in the context of settler colonial societies in the Americas and the politics of slavery and abolition.

The event is sponsored by the departments of American studies and Asian studies, and the Center for Foreign Languages, Literatures & Cultures.
