GREAT BARRINGTON -- On Saturday, a regiment of volunteers will convene at the Du Bois River Garden Park at Church and River streets at around 9 a.m. and spend much of the day cleaning up the nearby Housatonic River.
There has been a volunteer cleanup of the river since 1988. Organizer Rachel Fletcher conceded the Housatonic River isn't nearly as downright disgusting as it was 26 years ago, when volunteers were pulling couches and home appliances out of it.
"But it was a very tough winter, and we expect a lot of trash pickup," she said. "Plus, there is a lot of work removing invasive species from the banks. It's not just picking junk out of the river and it's clean."
Volunteers are asked to wear safe, protective clothing, inclu-
ding shoes with good traction, and bring gloves and eye protection.
"It's going to be a little chilly Saturday, so if you come, dress warmly," said Fletcher.
She also promises free lunch.
"Always," said Fletcher. "Coffee, lunch, doughnuts. It's the least we can do for the volunteers."
