ADAMS -- Motorists heading through Adams on Route 8 could face delays through the summer as work continues on the replacement of two water mains that are more than a century old.
The nearly $2 million project, done under the auspices of the Adams Fire District, is set to go on through the summer -- a total of about four months. By the completion of construction, the town will see the replacement of more than a mile of aging water infrastructure.
The Fire District, which includes the Water Department, is its own governmental entity and conducts its own projects. It is overseen by the Prudential Committee.
One of the two pipes was installed in the late 19th century, while the second main was installed in the early 20th century.
"It was old cast iron pipe, so it was just time to be updated," said William D. Cyrulik, superintendent of the Adams Water Department.
The two water mains -- one 12 inches and the other 16 inches -- will be replaced by a single 20-inch pipe.
"They are moving at a good pace," said Richard Tarsa, chairman of the Prudential Committee and chief of the Adams Police Department.
Though the work has at times blocked off one lane of Route 8, Tarsa said crews are working to make the impact on traffic as minimal as possible. The number of lanes closed off actually depends on what section of the road crews are working on -- the pipe crosses to opposite sides of the street in certain locations.
"We try to maintain two open lanes as much as possible," Tarsa said.
Tarsa said that not only is the new line being installed "state of the art," but the replacement also will be more cost-effective in the long run, saving the district in maintenance costs.
"This has been in the Fire District's master plan for well over 20 years," Tarsa said.
The project is funded by a $1.999 million low-interest loan through the United States Department of Agriculture, acc-
ording to Fire District Treasurer Dick Kleiner.
